HAZARDS ALONG ROUTES

Picture of barriers around posts.

Barriers placed around posts to protect the public while work is in progress but there is no lower bar for a person using a cane to tap against.

These barriers have the lower bar in position. This helps cane users detect the hazard, even though the bottom bar does not quite reach down to the ground.

Positioning of street furniture, such as seating, needs careful consideration so that the seating AND THE PEOPLE SEATED ON IT do not become hazards in a desire line route for people with visual impairments.
Consulting with the local associations of blind people can reveal where the desire lines may be.

Abandoned trollies create an unexpected hazard. We can all be guilty of inconsiderate actions through lack of awareness.
