QUESTION

DISTANCE TO PARKING BAYS

How far should parking bays be from a facility?

ANSWER

The Centre for Accessible Environments' document "Designing for Accessibility" recommends that parking bays should be within 50 metres of a building or facility if the route is uncovered, or 100 metres if it is covered.

The British Standard for Access is currently being rewritten. Part 1 is expected out soon and this will deal with access outside buildings and may include the distance between buildings and parking bays. Indications are that some provisions are being altered to improve access. This may or may not include reducing the travel distances from parking bays.
